How to Ask for Help in Ukrainian: Useful Expressions for Different Situations
Knowing how to ask for help is one of the first things you need when learning Ukrainian. You may know plenty of vocabulary, but when you actually need someone to help you, finding the right words can be surprisingly difficult.
If you search for help me in Ukrainian, you’ll quickly find Допоможіть мені (Help me). It’s correct, but it’s not the only way to ask for help. Ukrainian has several natural expressions, and the right choice depends on who you’re talking to and what kind of help you need.
The right phrases to ask for help can make your request sound natural and appropriate for the situation.
Допомагати - To Help
Start with допомагати (to help). This is the most common and versatile Ukrainian verb for asking someone for help, whether you need a hand with something small or need help in an emergency.
In an emergency, you can simply call out:
• Допоможіть! (Help!)
For everyday requests, Ukrainian uses ти (you) when talking to friends, relatives, or people you know well, and ви (you) when speaking to a stranger or in a formal situation. The verb changes depending on which form you use:
• Допоможеш? (Will you help?)
• Допоможете? (Will you help?)
You can also use the imperative with будь ласка (please):
• Допоможи мені, будь ласка. (Help me, please.)
• Допоможіть мені, будь ласка. (Help me, please.)
One of the most natural everyday options is a question with можеш (can you) when speaking informally or можете (can you) when speaking formally:
• Можеш мені допомогти? (Can you help me?)
• Можете мені допомогти? (Can you help me?)
If you want to ask for help politely, the wording also changes depending on who you are speaking to. With ти, use не міг би (could you, to a man) or не могла б (could you, to a woman):
• Ти не міг би мені допомогти? (Could you help me?)
• Ти не могла б мені допомогти? (Could you help me?)
With ви, use не могли б (could you):
• Ви не могли б мені допомогти, будь ласка? (Could you help me, please?)
• Не могли б ви мені допомогти? (Could you help me?)
When you want to say exactly what you need help with, Ukrainian commonly uses допомогти комусь із чимось (to help someone with something):
• Допоможіть мені з валізою, будь ласка. (Help me with my suitcase, please.)
Виручати - To Help Someone Out
Виручати (to help someone out) literally means pulling a person out of trouble. Reach for it when you’re stuck in a small jam and need a fix fast- the kind of moment when you ask someone for help because you’re counting on them in particular.
• Виручиш? (Can you bail me out?)
This verb is friendly, so skip it with a formal Ви, like a boss or professor. It fits a group addressed with the plural ви:
• Нам треба, щоб хтось забрав дітей зі школи. Ви не могли б нас виручити? (We need someone to pick the kids up from school. Could you help us out?)
Підсобити - To Lend a Hand
Підсобити (to lend a hand) is spoken, slangy, and physical. Think carrying, lifting, holding, moving. Nobody asks a colleague to підсобити with a tax report, but everybody asks a neighbor to підсобити with a wardrobe.
• Підсоби мені з сумками. (Give me a hand with the bags.)
Textbooks rarely cover words like this, yet you’ll hear them in every courtyard. To practice them with a teacher, try a lesson at Lngg Lab.
Посприяти - To Assist
Посприяти (to assist) lives in offices, official letters, and customer service. It sounds polished and a little distant, and it usually goes with something bureaucratic, like paperwork or a permit. Say it to a friend over coffee, and they’ll laugh.
• Чи не могли б ви посприяти в оформленні документів? (Could you assist with preparing the documents?)
Робити послугу - To Do Someone a Favor
Послуга (a favor) is something you ask someone to do when it takes some extra time or effort. In Ukrainian, two common expressions are:
• Зробити комусь послугу (to do someone a favor)
• Попросити когось про послугу (to ask someone for a favor)
For example:
• Зробиш мені послугу? Прочитай мій лист і виправ помилки. (Will you do me a favor? Read my email and correct the mistakes.)
• Можна вас попросити про послугу? (May I ask you for a favor?)
How to Offer Help in Ukrainian
You can also offer help when you see that someone needs it. The wording depends on who you are talking to:
• Вам допомогти? (Can I help you?)
• Тобі допомогти? (Can I help you?)
To offer your help directly, you can say:
• Давай, я допоможу. (Let me help.)
• Давайте, я допоможу. (Let me help.)
These expressions are useful in everyday conversations, whether you are helping a friend, offering assistance to a stranger, or responding when someone asks you for help. For more practice, go back to the examples of asking for help above and try using a few of them in your own conversations.
