The Rules Behind Ukrainian Euphony: у-в, і-й, з-зі-із

The Rules Behind Ukrainian Euphony: у-в, і-й, з-зі-із

If you are learning Ukrainian, you may notice that certain forms change depending on the sounds around them. At first, this can seem confusing, but these changes follow a clear rule: Ukrainian euphony.

Ukrainian changes certain sounds to make speech smoother and easier to pronounce. These changes follow clear Ukrainian grammar rules, so you do not have to memorize every form separately.

In this guide, we will look at three common alternations - у-в, і-й, з-зі-із - and explain when and why each form is used.

What Is Euphony in Ukrainian?

Euphony (melodiousness) is the way Ukrainian uses different sound forms to make speech smoother and easier to pronounce. It is a natural feature of Ukrainian pronunciation and grammar.

One of its main features is the alternation of certain words and sounds depending on their position in a sentence. The choice can depend on the sounds at the end of the previous word, the beginning of the next word, a pause, or the particular sound combination that follows.

This is especially noticeable in three common alternations: у-в, і-й, з-зі-із. They help avoid difficult combinations of vowels or consonants and make connected speech more natural.

There are general patterns, but there is no single rule that works in every situation. Ukrainian euphony has specific rules for different sound combinations, including some cases where one form is preferred regardless of the previous word.

In the sections below, we will look at each alternation separately and explain the main rules for choosing the right form.

The у-в Alternation

The Ukrainian prepositions у and в have the same basic meaning, but the choice between them depends on the sounds around them. The same alternation can also occur at the beginning of words.

You can think of у vs в as a traffic signal for your mouth: the sounds around them help determine which form makes pronunciation smoother.

When to Use “у”

The preposition у and the initial у- are used to make pronunciation smoother and avoid difficult sound combinations:

• Between consonants: Мій брат у школі - My brother is at school.

• At the beginning of a sentence or word before a consonant: У лісі тихо - It is quiet in the forest.

• At the beginning of a sentence before є, ї, ю, or я: У Японії зараз ніч - It is night in Japan.

• At the beginning of a sentence or a word before two or three letters representing consonants: У присмерку літають ластівки - Swallows fly in the twilight.

• Before в, ф, and combinations such as льв-, зв-, св-, дв-, тв-, гв-, and хв-, regardless of the ending of the previous word: Діти побували у Львові - The children visited Lviv.

• After a pause, including one marked by a comma, semicolon, colon, dash, parentheses, or ellipsis, before a consonant: Це було… у Києві - It was… in Kyiv.

When to Use “в”

The preposition в and the initial в- are generally used to make pronunciation smoother and avoid difficult sound combinations:

• Between vowels: Вона побувала в Одесі - She visited Odesa.

• After a consonant, before a vowel: Вартовий поглянув в отвір - The guard looked into the opening.

• After a vowel, before most consonants: Вона прожила в Японії десять років - She lived in Japan for ten years.

• At the beginning of a sentence before a vowel: В Одесі тепло - It is warm in Odesa.

Say Я була в Одесі out loud. After a vowel, в can sound softer and blend naturally with the surrounding sounds, almost like a vowel в. When you hesitate over у or в, listen to the sounds around them.

Before в, ф and combinations such as льв-, зв-, св-, дв-, тв-, гв-, хв-, у is used regardless of the ending of the previous word: Діти побували у Львові - The children visited Lviv; Поринути у звучання пісні - Immerse yourself in the sound of the song.

Words with Fixed у- or в-

Not every initial у- or в- is determined by euphony. Some words normally have a fixed form.

Words with у- include увага (attention), умова (condition), and уява (imagination).

Words with в- include влада (power), власний (own), and вплив (influence).

In some pairs, changing the initial letter changes the meaning:

• удача - luck; вдача - character or temperament

• уклад - established order or way of life; вклад - contribution

• управа - administration; вправа - exercise

These examples show why у and в cannot always be treated as interchangeable forms.

Prefixes and Forms with уві-

The alternation can also appear in prefixes and related forms. After a vowel, some words use the prefix в-, as in ввійти (to enter) and ввічливий (polite).

Before certain consonant combinations, you may also encounter уві-, as in уві сні (in a dream).

у-в in Practice

The choice between у and в depends on more than the final letter of the previous word. The beginning of the next word, the surrounding sound combinations, the position in the sentence, and pauses can all affect which form is used.

Learning these patterns makes it easier to recognize why Ukrainian uses у in some positions and в in others, rather than treating the alternation as a matter of memorization.

The і-й Alternation

The conjunctions і and й both mean “and,” but the form you use depends on the position of the conjunction and the sounds around it. The following rules explain when to use each form.

Use “і” in these cases:

• Between two consonants: Брат і сестра пішли до школи. - The brother and sister went to school.

• After a pause marked by punctuation, before a consonant: Я зателефонував їй. І тоді ми все обговорили. - I called her. And then we discussed everything.

• At the beginning of a sentence or word: Іван прийшов рано. - Ivan arrived early.

• Before words that begin with й, є, ї, ю, or я: Олена і Єва зустрілися вранці. - Olena and Eva met in the morning.

• When contrasting or juxtaposing two ideas: День і ніч змінюють одне одного. - Day and night alternate.

Use “й” in these cases:

• Between two vowels: Оля й Андрій зустрілися після роботи. - Olya and Andrii met after work.

• Between a vowel and a consonant: Ми зайшли в хату й побачили господаря. - We entered the house and saw the owner.

After words ending in й, я, ю, є, or ї, the coordinating conjunctions і or та can be used: Мрії і плани змінюють наше життя. / Мрії та плани змінюють наше життя. - Dreams and plans shape our lives.

The з-зі-із Alternation

The preposition з and its variants із and зі (зо) are used in different positions to make pronunciation smoother. The choice depends on the sounds represented by the letters around the preposition.

Use “з” in these cases:

• At the beginning of a sentence before a vowel: З одним рибалкою він дуже подруживився. - He became very friendly with one fisherman.

• In the middle of a sentence before a vowel, regardless of the ending of the previous word or a pause: Диктант з української мови. - A dictation in Ukrainian.

• At the beginning of a sentence before a consonant other than з, с, ц, ж, ч, or ш: З лісу потягло прохолодою. - Cool air came from the forest.

• Less often, before an initial consonant combination: З другого боку простягалися поля. - Fields stretched out on the other side.

• Before a consonant combination in the following word when the previous word ends in a vowel: Вона відвідала з друзями Київ. - She visited Kyiv with friends.

• Between a vowel and a consonant: Я з любов’ю повертав свій погляд до України. - I turned my gaze toward Ukraine with love.

Use “із” in these cases:

• Mainly before a single letter representing з, с, ц, ж, ч, or ш, regardless of the ending of the previous word and at the beginning of a sentence: Перстень виготовлено із золота. - The ring was made of gold.

• Between letters representing one or two consonants that are not z, s, ts, zh, ch, or sh: Лист із Бразилії. - A letter from Brazil.

• When the previous letter represents a sibilant or hushing sound: Бабуся вийшла босоніж із хати. - Grandma went barefoot out of the house.

In this position, з can also be used: Він зістрибнув з коня. - He jumped off the horse.

Use “зі” in these cases:

• When the following word begins with a consonant combination, mainly with з, с, or ш, as well as in some other cases, regardless of the ending of the previous word or a pause: Ви зустріли ворога зі зброєю в руках. - You met the enemy with a weapon in your hands.

• Зі школи на майдан вивалила дітвора. - The children poured out of the school onto the square.

• Прибув зі Львова. - He arrived from Lviv.

In some combinations, із and зі can be used interchangeably: разом із сходом сонця / разом зі сходом сонця - at sunrise.

The form “зо”

Зо is a phonetic variant of зі used:

• With the numerals два and три: Позичив зо дві сотні. - He borrowed about two hundred.

• With the pronoun мною: Він був зі мною / Він був зо мною. - He was with me.

There can also be deviations from these rules in literary texts because of rhythm and intonation.
