Games of Thrones, Ukrainian Edition: The World of Kyivan Rus

Illustration

Mystical, legendary, and full of knightly valor — the Middle Ages often conjure images of epic battles and bloody power struggles. We think we know this period well. But do we really?
How much do we actually know about one of the largest medieval states that once stood in the very heart of Europe — Kyivan Rus? Where did it come from, how did it rise, and what cultural legacy did it leave behind? And, perhaps most intriguingly — what still remains relevant from that distant era?
Who were the rulers at the helm of this powerful state? What “games of thrones” unfolded around the capital’s seat of power? Who managed to seize control—and more importantly — how did they manage to keep it? How have the images of mighty Kyivan princes evolved in modern times? What is historical fact, and what is legend? What mysteries remain unresolved to this day?

We invite you to join our course to uncover the answers to these questions— and to unlock the secrets of a forgotten empire. You’ll discover who among the princes once hung his shield on the gates of Constantinople, who murdered his own brothers in a ruthless quest for power, and who —born frail and unlikely to rule — overcame all odds to become one of the most influential statesmen of his time, building magnificent churches that still stand in the heart of resilient Ukraine.
This is just a glimpse of what awaits. A world of fascinating stories and dramatic turns of history is waiting for you.
We look forward to welcoming you on this journey through the past.

Your Guide Through History and Culture

Kateryna

Our course will be led by a unique expert who brings together several perspectives: a philologist, art critic, and sociologist of culture, with a master’s degree in philology, years of teaching Ukrainian, and active involvement in scientific research — currently preparing a dissertation.

Kateryna goes beyond teaching facts — she weaves together history, culture, and language, showing how they intertwine and come alive. With her guidance, Kyivan Rus won’t remain a distant past — you’ll uncover its myths, explore its cultural legacy, and see how it still echoes in modern Ukraine.
